GOWERS IP REVIEW

The Gowers Review of Intellectual Property was launched in December 2005.  Its aim was to examine the granting and protection of patents, copyright, designs and trade marks, to ensure that the award, use and enforcement of IP in the UK is coherent and flexible. The Review also considered the governance of IP.

ACG attended several consultation meetings with the Review team at the Treasury and made a joint submission with the British Brands Group.

The Review report was published in December 2006 and sets out a number of targeted, practical recommendations to deliver a robust IP framework fit for the digital age. The principal recommendations of the Review are aimed at:

bullet orange
tackling IP crime and ensuring that rights are   well enforced;
bullet orange
reducing the costs and complexity of the system;
bullet orange
reforming copyright law to allow individuals and   institutions to use content in ways consistent   with the digital age.
