THE SCALE OF COUNTERFEITING

The counterfeiting of any product is a crime. Because it is a covert criminal activity, no conclusive figures are available about the scale of the problem. The fakers don't exactly publicise their activities, and they don't pay tax or file returns at Companies House.

Instead brand owners and law enforcement must estimate volumes on the basis of seizures made or sudden unexplained changes in regional markets. Industry organisations and regulatory authorities work hard to gather information, but can only provide approximate measures of the impact on local, national and global economies...
