China maintains its position as the world’s leading counterfeiting superpower, accounting for 63.2% of global counterfeit seizures. That is why ACG and its members were keen to meet Tom Duke, UK Intellectual Property (IP) Attaché to China in London last Tuesday, July 12 (pictured left with ACG Vice-Chair, Thomas Parrott - Beachbody).
Tom outlined his work in China; running government-to-government central policies across IP, supporting British companies to operate in China and advising on how to achieve better IP outcomes. Last year alone, Tom and his team worked on 250 cases across all areas of protection, in all sectors.
Counterfeiting has expanded over the years as it feeds off the explosion of internet sales. ACG members questioned Tom on his efforts to tackle the problem by meeting with companies such as Alibaba. Alibaba is the world’s biggest commerce company that provides consumer-to-consumer, business-to-consumer and business-to-business sales services via web portals. It also provides electronic payment services, a shopping search engine and data-centric cloud computing services.
“That was a great meeting and a fantastic opportunity to comment on Tom’s work and provide feedback for future strategy.” commented one ACG member.
Other events are planned for Tom to engage with the brands and find out more about IP enforcement.
