ORGANISED crime gangs are ‘hijacking' classified ads website Craigslist to sell drugs, stolen passports and counterfeit goods, according to a BBC investigation.

The raids were a joint operation between Humberside Police and North East Lincolnshire Council's trading standards department as part of Operation Hercules, a campaign to curb street drinking, begging, drug dealing and illicit tobacco sales.

Jonathan “Jonny†Kahn, 64, of Parkway, Golders Green, London, had denied peddling tens of thousands of fake Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles and other branded toys to major high street shops but was given a two year jail term, suspended for two years, after a trial found him guilty. The case led to a Proceeds of Crime Act investigation which found the father-of-12 had assets worth £704,090, and that he had benefitted from his crimes to the tune of £619,286.

Counterfeit mobile phones with potentially dangerous chargers have been seized in Staffordshire by County Council Trading Standards officers. Hundreds of fake Nokia 3310 phones were seized from an industrial unit in East Staffordshire and a property in Newcastle following a tip off to Trading Standards officers. The Nokia 3310 is a reissue and updated model from 2000 and retails legitimately from around £50 to £70. Counterfeit versions of the phone are being sold at £15 and less.

Ali, 25, of Norton Street, Radford, pleaded guilty to two charges relating to the unauthorised use of a trademark and one of failing to specify health warnings, all on November 23 last year.
